Madeleine L’Engle, the author of A Wrinkle in Time, once said, “Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving.” Picture books, novels and graphic novels about characters both real and imagined can help our children develop a sense of empathy, giving them the opportunity to think outside of themselves.

A few books to consider: The Black Book of Colors by Menena Cottin, Goal! by Mina Javahervin, Wonder by R.J. Palacio and El Deafo by Cece Bell.
